Barry’s first attempt at writing fiction was at primary
school, writing long doggerels about other children at the school. Then came a
special girl at secondary level and this brought out a very strange way of
getting noticed, writing serial fiction on a day to day basis, with her as the
heroine. It worked, despite the author failing to take advantage of
it.
The writing came to a dead stop and remained dormant for
half a life time. In the meantime, he found a girl silly enough to marry him, had
kids, and found himself at the gates to middle age, divorcing.
As so often happens, as one door closes another crashes
open and knocks your aquarium over. He met Keiko on her visit to Australia. She
was here as a leader of a KSKK school visit and had the good sense to be
visiting his daughters’ school. He offered to take her out to see the countryside.
It took a great deal of convincing, but eventually she said
okay. It turned out to be a memorable day. So memorable, he continued to write to
her every day after she had returned to Japan.
Now, this lovely and talented lady was very hard to
impress and the only thing that seemed to make an impression on her was artistic
talent, something he had a serious dearth of. He had to fake it. He pretended he
was
a writer. She fell for it. Next he was writing a story which rambled on in letter
after letter, finally turning into a novella. As her English was still needing
some polish, she thought it was good. This became Nymphs and Shepherds, which
will be available as an E-book here shortly.
With that done, he felt compelled to show her it wasn’t a
fluke, so he started a novel called The Temple. That is yet to be finished, but
it led to more novels and many short stories. Some nine novels, three still to
be finished, have been written since those days and now the first is published
and available in paperback on Amazon and other sites.
MISS
ALICE MERRIWETHER is a satirical look at a typical
Midwest small town, but it could be any small town anywhere. It’s the type of
book you want to read to get your mind off your problems. A fun read.
